At-a-Glance
Negotiating the best price for natural gas in today's deregulated environment is time-consuming and complex. GMA's natural gas purchasing service saves you money and removes the burden of figuring out what price components, rates, and plans best fits the needs of your government.
Natural Gas Purchasing
With Georgia’s natural gas deregulation, the Atlanta Gas Light Company stores and distributes natural gas in its facilities. Marketers then sell the natural gas to you. Despite deregulation and competition, most public entities overpay between 3 to 12 cents per therm of natural gas, including overpayments for pipeline and transportation costs. To help you save money, our experienced team tackles the difficult process of natural gas purchasing, negotiating, and implementing by:
- Selecting your marketer and handling all negotiations. To reduce your natural gas expense, we select the right marketer and negotiate as necessary to ensure the lowest possible cost to you.
- Regularly reviewing billing records and resolving problems with your marketer. To ensure that your natural gas marketer indeed invoices as agreed, we regularly review your billing records for errors or inconsistencies. In addition, we’ll help resolve any problems that arise along the way.
Cost
You pay no direct fee. We include a one-cent per therm of gas usage in the rate charged by the marketer as a service charge to cover our costs.
We negotiate pricing based on your natural gas usage. If your current supplier modifies their contract, we will work with that supplier to ensure that you are always paying the lowest price. If a new marketer is chosen, we will ensure that all accounts are moved to the new marketer and then follow up to confirm that the contract pricing is correct and honored month to month.
Also, we may lock a percentage of the natural gas at a fixed price and keep the remaining portion on a variable basis. This strategy gives you the benefit of a blended rate that provides budget certainty and limits the impact of energy price increases.

Getting Started
To begin using the service is simple.
Once the contract between GMA and the public entity is signed and current natural gas account information is provided to GMA's consultant, Phelts and Associates, pricing is negotiated based on the entity's usage of natural gas. If the current supplier modifies their contract, Phelts and Associates will work with that supplier to ensure that the lower pricing model is implemented.
If a new marketer is chosen, Phelts and Associates will ensure that all accounts are moved to the new marketer and then follow up to confirm that the contract pricing is honored on all accounts.
Who can use this service?
Any public entity that is served by the Atlanta Gas Light Company system, including cities, counties, school boards and authorities.
What benefits can I expect to achieve through this service?
Based on our analysis, most public entities are overpaying between three to twelve cents per therm of natural gas, including overpayments for pipeline and transportation costs. Additionally, you will have the assurance that your government's natural gas costs have been competitively negotiated or bid by an industry professional who provides on-going monitoring of your accounts.
How much does the service cost?
There is no direct fee. A one-cent per therm service charge is included in your bill to cover the cost of the service.
What do I need to provide GMA to participate in the service?
- A list of gas accounts by the Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) account numbers or one invoice for each account. The Atlanta Gas Light Company account number may be different from the account number assigned by your marketer. It is a 10 digit number commonly described on the bill as the "AGLC Number."
- Signed contract, including an agency form.
- A copy of a few recent gas invoices.
- Any known gas contract terms to help us evaluate cost for you.
- Advise us of any special needs or requirements for your entity.
