The GMA Board of Directors has named Valdosta City Manager Larry Hanson as the executive director of the association. Hanson becomes the sixth full-time executive director of the organization since it was created in 1933.
Hanson first began working for Valdosta in 1975 and has held the positons of Director of Parks, Recreation & Community Affairs and Assistant City Manager before being appointed City Manager in 1995. He is a graduate of Valdosta State University and Valdosta High School. He is a graduate of Leadership Georgia and a charter member of Leadership Lowndes, serving twice as its president.
Within GMA, Hanson has served on the Board of Directors, the Legislative Policy Council and the Federal Policy Council. He is a frequent instructor at GMA training events. He previously chaired the Association’s Revenue and Finance Policy Committee and served on several joint GMA-ACCG committees that helped resolve longstanding areas of conflict between Georgia’s cities and counties. He is presently the Vice Chairman of the Board of the Department of Community Affairs and a member of the Federal Communications Commission’s Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee.
“We are pleased to have Mr. Hanson take on this leadership position at GMA,” said GMA President and Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard. “He brings great management skills, a deep understanding of the association and years of commitment and service to city government. Under his leadership, we expect GMA to continue to be the strong advocate and service provider to cities it has been since its inception.”
“I am humbled and honored to be appointed as the Executive Director of GMA,” said Hanson. “Having been an active member for many years, I value GMA’s commitment to serving Georgia’s cities and to advocacy, training and high quality programs for its members. I look forward to serving with GMA’s Board of Directors and its professional staff to continue to influence positive change for Georgia’s cities and the citizens we serve.”
