The Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) is seeking candidates for the position of General Counsel.
A successful candidate should possess a proven commitment to professionalism, integrity and leadership. The ideal candidate is someone who has extensive experience with local government law, is non-partisan and has the ability to manage and collaborate with attorneys and with GMA staff across the variety of services performed by GMA and on a varied range of issues presented to, reviewed by or addressed by GMA.
This position reports to the Executive Director and the primary purpose is to provide legal advice to GMA staff and committees and serve as legal counsel for the GMA Board of Directors, Georgia City Solutions, Inc. and the Georgia Cities Foundation. The position must also respond to inquiries from city attorneys and member cities, review and prepare legal documents, analyze proposed legislation, conduct seminars on legal issues and topics that impact municipalities and advocate on behalf of the interests of GMA’s membership before legislative bodies and appellate courts.
Managing the GMA Legal Department also includes supervising legal services and compliance advice provided by GMA as administrator of the Georgia Municipal Employees Benefit System (retirement and health insurance plans), the Georgia Workers Compensation Self-Insurance Plan, the Georgia Interlocal Risk Management Agency and Local Government Risk Management Services.
Juris Doctorate required, plus at least 10 years of experience as an attorney in Georgia local government law. Must possess current membership in the Georgia Bar Association and license to practice before state and federal courts.
