Successful Cities: Capitalizing on Federal Grants and Loans

August 21, 2017
During the summer of 2017, GMA staff, in cooperation with representatives from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the United States Department of Agriculture Office of Rural Development (USDA), interviewed city and university officials in an effort to showcase small- to medium-sized cities that have been successful in funding city projects through federal grant or loan programs.

The following videos highlight case studies of cities that successfully applied for financial resources from federal agencies.

City of Statesboro

In Statesboro, the city and Georgia Southern University cooperated to obtain a grant from the US Economic Development Administration. GMA interviewed Statesboro Mayor Jan Moore and the Director of the Business Innovation Group at Georgia Southern University, Dr. Dominique Halaby, to find out more about their experiences with EDA and how a federal grant helped to expand the university’s city campus into a hub for innovation and entrepreneurs.

City of Sandersville

In Sandersville, an EPA brownfields cleanup grant allowed the city to continue realizing its downtown master plan by converting a former gas station and café into a parking lot and greenspace. GMA talked with City Administrator Judy McCorkle about the application process.

City of Vienna

In Vienna, GMA interviewed Mayor Hobby Stripling to learn how he used a USDA Rural Development community facilities loan to renovate and expand the volunteer fire department's station.
