GIRMA Inmate Medical Program
4/2/2008
Cities with their own jail facilities, or who contract with other state/county/city jail facilities to house their inmates, and/or police departments with arrest authority, may be held responsible for the medical care of inmates/arrestees, no matter how much it costs. In response to this significant exposure to its membership, the GMA property and liability self-insurance fund (Georgia Interlocal Risk Management Agency or GIRMA) now offers the GIRMA Inmate Medical Program at no additional premium to its members. The program provides claims management and catastrophic medical protection for members.

Among the services the claims management service performs are determining if medical treatment was delivered, determining errors or duplicate billings, preparing checks to be sent to providers and providing detailed claim reports.

The medical coverage provides $250,000 medical insurance for each inmate, with a $10,000 deductible per inmate for a policy year. The insurance covers inpatient hospitalization, emergency room charges, accidental injuries, doctor fees, outpatient surgery and self-inflicted injuries, among others.

To avoid future financial surprises and reduce administrative burdens relative to inmate medical costs, contact George Van Leuven at gvanleuven@gmanet.com, 678.686.6221 or toll-free in Georgia outside the Atlanta calling area at 888-488-4462 for more information about the GIRMA Inmate Medical Program.  To download the GIRMA Inmate Medical Program brochure, click here.
