A comprehensive revision of the Open Meetings/Open Records law was passed during the 2012 Legislative Session and has been signed by Governor Nathan Deal.
The new law affects several key provisions affecting open meetings and open records, including the amount that a city may charge for filling open records request, the process by which a person may request city records, and the definition of a “meeting.”
GMA's detailed summary of the new legislation can assist cities in complying with the new law.
GMA's publication, Government in the Sunshine: A Guide to Georgia's Open Meetings and Open Records Laws for Municipal Officials, is currently being updated to reflect the changes in the law. Also, there will be an Open Meeting/Open Records session during the 2012 Annual Convention and GMA will provide training opportunities later in the year to review the new law.
